Let u=x-1%2F2.

That makes your equation look like this:

u%5E2%2B5u-4=0

Solve the equation in u just like any other quadratic. Since it doesn't factor and the coefficient on the 1st degree term is odd, you might as well just use the quadratic formula.

You will get two answers, just like you always do when you solve a quadratic. In this case they will be real but irrational. Once you have your two expressions for the answers, u=r and u=s, replace u with x-1%2F2 and solve each expression for x.
