Equations and inequalities are solved in the same manner with one important exception. When you multiply (or divide, which is really the same thing) by a negative number when solving an inequality, you must reverse the sense of the inequality. "Greater than" becomes "Less than" and vice versa.

Here is a trivial example that illustrates why:

2%3C3 is clearly a true statement. But if you multiply both sides by -1, you get -2 on the left and -3 on the right. You must then reverse the inequality sign so that the statement will remain true: -2%3E-3
