Question 137328This question is from textbook Introductory Algebra
: Basketball Scoring: In a recent game of the 2004-2005 basketball season, the San Antonio Spurs scored 85 of their points on a combination of 39 two-and-three-point baskets. How many of each type of shot were made?
I am trying to get the logic of this problem....I know how to get the answers but I am having problems to set up the problem in two equations. If someone can explain how to read the problem, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Basketball Scoring: In a recent game of the 2004-2005 basketball season, the San Antonio Spurs scored 85 of their points on a combination of 39 two-and-three-point baskets. How many of each type of shot were made?
-----------------------
Break the two and the three pointers into two groups:
2-points: x of them
3-points: 39-x of them
------------------------
The "x" 2-pointers give you 2x points
The (39-x) 3-pointers give you 3(39-x) = 117-3x points
-------------------
EQUATION:
points + points = 85
2x + 117-3x = 85
-x = -32
x = 32 (# of 2-pointers)
39-x = 7 (# of 3-pointers)
================================

Stan H.
