Question 136844: i'm having a hard time understanding "y" and "x" intercepts and I still don't understand if after looking through classroom examples, and my book. here is one of the problems:
find the "y" and "x" intercepts:
-2x - 8y = 16
if anyone can help, i'd really appreciate it! thanks in advance!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The line equation is: Y=mX+b WHERE m=SLOPE & b=Y INTERCEPT.
-2x-8y=16
first we must isolate the y term on the left side of the equation.
-8y=2x+16
y=2x/-8+16/-8
y=-x/4-2 this is the line equation in standard form.
THE Y INTERCEPT IS b=-2
TO FIND THE X INTERCEPT WE SET Y=0 & SOLVE FOR X.
0=-X/4-2
-X/4=2
-X=2*4
-X=8
X=-8 FOR THE X INTERCEPT.
PROOF IS IN THE FOLLOWING GRAPH:
