The percentage of women in the 20-24 age group who have never married went from 55% in 1970 to 73%in 2000. Let 1970 be year 0 and 2000 be year 30.
a) Find and interpret the slope of the line through the points (0,55) and (30, 73)
slope = (73-55)/(30-0) = 3/5
---------------------------------------
b) Find the equation of the line in part (a)
Percentage = (3/5)(# of years after 1070)+55
--------------------------------------------
c)What is the meaning of the y-intercept
It is the percentage in the year 1970

d)Use the equation to predict the percentage in 2010.
2010 is 40 years after 1970, so
%(40) = (3/5)40 + 55
%(40) = 70%

e) If this trend continues, then in what year will the percentage of women in the 20-24 age group who have never married reach 100%?
100 = (3/5)(year) + 55
45 = (3/5)year
75 = year
1970 + 75 = 2045 (year in which the percent will be 100)

B) Y=mX+b
55=.6*0+b
b=55% THE Y INTERCEPT.
C) THE Y INTERCEPT IS THE VALUE FOR YEAR 0 IN THIS PROBLEM.
D) IN 2010 (YEAR 40) THE Y VALUE WILL BE:
Y=.6*40+55
Y=24+55
Y=79% ANSWER FOR THE PROJECTION OF UNMARRIED WOMEN.
E) THE PROJECTION FOR 100% IS:
100=.6X+55
.6X=100-55
.6X=45
X=45/.6
X=75 OR THE YEAR 1970+75=2045 THIS PROJECTION SHOWS 100% OF THE WOMEN HAVE NEVER BEEN MARRIED.
