You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A corner lot originally was square lost 185m^2 of area when one of the adjacent streets was widened by 3m and the other was widened by 5m. Find the new dimensions of the lot.
:
Let x = original dimension of the square lot
Then x^2 = the area of the original lot
:
The new dimensions: (x-3) by (x-5)
:
New lot area = original lot area - 185 sq/m
(x-3)*(x-5) = x^2 - 185
:
x^2 - 8x + 15 = x^2 - 185
:
x^2 - x^2 - 8x = -185 - 15
:
-8x = -200
:
x = 200/8
:
x = 25 meters the diminsion of the original lot
:
New dimensions:
25 - 3 = 22 meters
by
25 - 5 = 20 meters
:
Check solution; find the area of both:
25 * 25 = 625
22 * 20 = 440
--------------
differs = 185
