Question 134679: Two planes leave Pittsburgh and Philadelphia at the same time, each going to the other city. One plane flies 30 miles per hour faster than the other. Find the ground speed of each plane if the cities are 260 miles apart and the planes pass one another after 40 minutes of flying time. Answer by rajagopalan(174) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! LET THE SPED OF PLANE 1 = X
LET THE SPED OF PLANE 2 = X+30
DISTANCE IN 40 MINUTES OF FLYING FOR PLANE 1=X(40/60)=(2/3)X
DISTANCE IN 40 MINUTES OF FLYING FOR PLANE 2=(X+30)(40/60)=(2/3)(X+30)
ADD THE TWO DISTANCES,
(2/3)X + (2/3)(X+30)=260
2X/3+2X/3+20=260
4X/3=260-20
4X/3=240
X=240*3/4
X=180
THE SPED OF PLANE 1 = X =180
THE SPED OF PLANE 2 = X+30=180+30=210
SPEED UNIT MILES PER HOUR
