Question 134677: A student scores a total of 500 points during a basketball season. His total number of 2 and 3 point field goals is 320 and free throws is 50. How many 2 point and 3 point field goals were made?
If you set up 2x + 3y = 320, how do you set up the next equation?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You need two equations.
Let X be the number of 2pointers and Y be the number of 3 pointers
He made 320 goals.
320+=+X+%2B+Y
He also scored 500 points
500+=++2X+%2B+3Y+%2B+50+
450+=+2X+%2B+3Y
The problem now is the number of points is way too low. Something is hosed in your problem. If all the shots were 2 pointers, he still scores 640 that way. Which is more than 450.
Check your total. Then adjust the equations accordingly and solve
