: I have been working on this math problem and I got an answer, but I am not sure if I did it right!! I was wondering if anyone could help me? I would deeply appreciate it!! Please and Thank You!
This is the work that I did
It takes a plane 40min to fly from Boston to Los Angeles at 525mi/h than it does to return at 600mi/h. How far apart are the cities?
My Chart
r * t =d
trip 525 * t+.6 = 525(t+.6) 40/60=.6
return 600 * t = 600t
t=time in hours
600t=525(t+.6)
600t=525t + 315
-525t -525t
75t=315
divide by 75t and t=4.2
I don't know if this answer is right, but I hope someone could help me.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You've done all the right math so far ... but
You were asked, how far apart are the cities?
You have correctly calculated the time. You have also correctly stated the relationship between speed, distance and time.
One more step and you have your answer
2520

It takes a plane 40 min more to fly from Boston to Los Angeles at 525mi/h than it does to return at 600 mi/h. How far apart are the cities?
:
You seem to have the correct method, however,
40 min = 40/60 = 2/3 hr, (not .6 hrs)
:
You correctly wrote an equal distance equation: Dist = speed * time
600t = 525(t + 2/3)
600t = 525t + 350; (not 315)
600t - 525t = 350
75t = 350
t = 350/75
t = 4.6667 hrs
:
They are asking you to find the distance:
We will use decimals here:
4.6667 * 600 = 2800 mi
:
Check solution using the speed of 525 mph
525(4.667 + .667) = 2800 mi also

Well, first in order to have a word problem, you must
be able to state it in some language that the average
person speaking that language can understand.
Your problem is:
"It takes a plane 40min to fly from Boston to Los Angeles at 525mi/h than it does to return at 600mi/h. How far apart are the cities?"
The first sentence is not something I can understand, but I'll take
a guess at what you mean.
Speed from Boston to LA = 525 mi/hr
Let d= distance from Boston to LA
I'll assume it takes 40 min longer to fly Boston to LA
than it takes to fly LA to Boston.
d+=+525%2A%28t+%2B+40%2F60%29
d+=+600%2At
600t+=+525%2A%28t+%2B+40%2F60%29
600t+=+525t+%2B+350
75t+=+350
t+=+13%2F3hrs
d+=+600%2At
d+=+2800mi
The distance between Boston and LA is 28000 mi
This checks pretty good with the driving distance
between them, which is 3020 mi

My Chart
r * t =d
trip 525 * (t+(2/3)) = 525t + 525(2/3)
return 600 * t = 600t
t=time in hours
600t=525(t+(2/3))
600t=525t + 525*(2/3)
-525t -525t
75t=525(2/3)
divide by 75 to get and t= 4 2/3 = 14/3
------------------------
distance from Boston to LA = (14/3)*600 = 14*200 = 2800 miles
