1. a cube has 6 equal faces __ each face is a square __ if x is the length of an edge of the cube
__ then x^2 is the area of one face and 6x^2 is the surface area of the cube

2. the lateral surface area of a cylinder is just a rolled up rectangle
__ the sides are the length of the cylinder and the circumference of the cylinder
__ the circumference is 2*pi*r (r is the radius of the cylinder), so the lateral area is 2*pi*r*L
