You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x="oz of 8%", so 36-x="oz of 5%"

(8%)(x)+(5%)(36-x)=(6%)(36) __ multiplying by 100 to clear percentages

8x+180-5x=216 __ 3x=36

Answer by josmiceli(19441) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(total amount of salt) / (amount of solution) = 6%
Let a= amount of 8% solution to be added
Let b= amount of 5% solution to be added
%28.08a+%2B+.05b%29+%2F+%28a+%2B+b%29+=+.06
a+%2B+b+=+36
b+=+36+-+a
%28.08a+%2B+.05b%29+%2F+36+=+.06
%28.08a+%2B+.05%2836+-+a%29%29+%2F+36+=+.06
multiply both sides by 36
.08a+%2B+.05%2836+-+a%29+=+2.16
.08a+%2B+1.8+-+.05a+=+2.16
.03a+=+.36
a+=+12oz
b+=+36+-+a
b+=+36+-+12
b+=+24
12 oz of the 8% solution and 24 oz of the 5% solution are needed
check:
%28.08a+%2B+.05b%29+%2F+36+=+.06
%28.08%2A12+%2B+.05%2A24%29+%2F+36+=+.06
%28.96+%2B+1.2%29+%2F+36+=+.06
.96+%2B+1.2+=+2.16
2.16+=+2.16
OK
