x+7 = points scored by Ben.
x-2 = points scored by Paul.

Equation is that total points for all three adds up to 38:
x + x+7 + x-2 = 38
3x + 5 = 38

Subtract 5 from each side:
3x = 33
x= 11 points for Jack!!
