-5w%2B-5%28-8%29 Distribute -5 to w-8 by writing "-5" in front of each term in the parenthesis


-5w%2B40 Multiply -5 and -8 to get positive 40


So -5%28w-8%29 distributes and simplifies to -5w%2B40. In other words -5%28w-8%29=-5w%2B40






%28y-4%29%28-2%29 Start with the given expression


-2y%2B%28-2%29%28-4%29 Distribute -2 to y-4 by writing "-2" in front of each term in the parenthesis



-2y%2B8 Multiply -2 and -4 to get positive 8



So %28y-4%29%28-2%29 distributes and simplifies to -5w%2B40. In other words %28y-4%29%28-2%29=-2y%2B8

The distributive property says a%28b%2Bc%29=ab+%2B+ac.

So for -5%28w-8%29,
Step 1: multiply -5 times w: -5w
Step 2: multiply -5 times -8: 40
Step 3: add the two parts: -5w%2B40

Do the same thing with the other problem. You can move the -2 to the other side of the parentheses - the commutative property says we can do that - if it makes more sense to you that way.
