Question 132410: Okay, I asked this one Friday and nobody got back to me so I am asking it again. Here is the problem...
Solve the ration expression 5x/3x+1[-]1/9x+3=7/6
I know all the numerators have to have a LCD and I know how to do that, but once I do that and solve out the problem I am not getting the right answer. If you could help me I would appreciate it!!
I placed the - sign in [] so you could tell the fraction apart, I am sure you do not need that but I always get confused which fraction is which so I placed it anyways.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
IF YOU MEAN:
5X/(3X+1)-1/(9X+3)=7/6 THEN:
[5X(9X+3]-(3X+1)]/(3X+1)(9X+3)=7/6
(45X^2+15X-3X-1)/(27X^2+9X+9X+3)=7/6
(45X^2+12X-1)/(27X^2+18X+3)=7/6 NOW CROSS MULTIPLY
6(45X^2+12X-1)=7(27X^2+18X+3)
270X^2+72X-6=189X^2+126X+21
270X^2-189X^2+72X-126X-6-21=0
81X^2-54X-27=0
(81X+27)(X-1)=0
81X+27=0
81X=-27
X=-27/81
X=-1/3 ANSWER
X-1=0
X=1 ANSWER.

Hello! What you have here is called a fractional equation. The first thing you should do is clear the fractions by, as you said, multiplying every term on both sides of the equation by the LCD.
Our LCD in this case is: (3x + 1)(9x + 3)(6)
I will multiply every term on both sides by the LCD.
5x/(3x + 1) times (3x + 1)(9x + 3)(6) = 5x(9x + 3)(6)
1/(9x + 3) times (3x + 1)(9x + 3)(6) = -(3x + 1) (6)
7/6 times (3x + 1)(9x + 3)(6) = 7(3x + 1) (9x + 3)
Here is what we have now:
5x(9x + 3)(6)-(3x + 1) (6)= 7(3x + 1) (9x + 3)....Notice that the fractions are gone.
