India, Ukraine, and the United States combined have more than 40,000 movie theaters. India has 8,975 theaters. Ukraine has 8,702 fewer than the U.S. and 5,985 more than India. How many theaters are in the U.S.?

First of all, assign variables to the different countries. I am going to use I for India, U for Ukraine, and S for United States.
You know that I = 8975 because it tells you so. The next sentence in the problem tells you U+=+S+-+8702 and U+=+5985+%2B+I. Since you know I=8975, you can plug it into the second equation to find U: U+=+5985+%2B+8975, so U = 14,960. Now that you know U, you can plug it into the first equation to figure out how many are in S: 14960+=+S+-+8702. To solve, move 8702 over to the left side of the equation by adding it to get: 23662+=+S. There are 23,662 theaters in the US.
