You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In a bowl, 1/3 of the fruit are apples and 2/5 are oranges. There are also 8 bananas. How many apples are there in the bowl? How many bananas are there? How many pieces of fruit are there in all?
-------------------
Let "x" be the total number of fruit:
EQUATION:
(1/3)x + (2/5)x + 8 = x
Multiply thru by 15 to get:
5x + 6x + 120 = 15x
4x = 120
x= 30 (# of pieces of fruit)
(1/3)x = 10 (# of apples)
(2/5)x = 12 (# of oranges)
