Question 131258: Hello tutors at algebra.com,

I'm 13 years old and having a lot of difficulty working this out. I know if I actually did it or actually spent the time to work it out I would find out the answer, but I would like to know a quick method or something reasonably easy and quick to do to solve the problem. I have encountered these plenty of times and have found so much difficulty and irritation with them, because they take so long to do. If you could find a quick method I'd love it. Here's the question and another similar one and I was also wondering if the same approach is applied to both:

"If you have 50c, $2 and $1 coins, in how many ways can you make up $10?"
"I have a 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c coin. What is the total number of non-zero amounts of money which can be formed from some or all of these coins?"

Help, a detailed explanation would be really appreciated and loved.

Thankyou,

Jasmine
