Let's add x%5E3-2x%2B1 and -x%5E3%2B5x%5E2%2B7 (notice these are both polynomials of degree 3) to get

%28x%5E3-x%5E3%29%2B5x%5E2-2x%2B%281%2B7%29 Group like terms


5x%5E2-2x%2B8 Combine like terms


Notice how the result is a polynomial of degree 2
