Question 128998: Can you please help me with solving this story problem?
It Cost Maurice $102 to buy refreshment for 6 people. It cost Sue $162 to buy refreshment for 10 people at the same restaurant. Write the linear equation of the line that would pass through (6,102) and (10, 162). I have been out of school for over 15 years and I do not even know how to set up the problem I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. Thank-you in advance.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
WELCOME BACK!!!!
THE LINE EQUATION IS Y=mX+b WHERE m=SLOPE & b=Y INTERCEPT
FIRST WE FIND THE SLOPE m=(Y2-Y1)/(X2-X1)
(162-102)/(10-6)
60/4=15 IS THE SLOPE (m).
NOW REPLACE THE X & Y TERMS WITH 6 & 102 & SOLVE FOR THE Y INTERCEPT (b).
102=15*6+b
102=90+b
b=102-90
b=12 THE Y INTERCEPT.
SO THE LINE EQUATION FOR THIS SITUATION IS:
Y=15X+12 THE GRAPH FOLLOWS:
+graph%28+300%2C+200%2C+-6%2C+5%2C+-10%2C+15%2C+15x+%2B12%29+ (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 15, 15x +12).
