Question 12897: Please help me figure out how to do the function thing. I dont understand the Domain numbers and where to put them. the function is: F%28x%29=X%5E3 and the domain numbers are: (-3, 0,1.2,5) Thank You Amber

functions is an easy topic, honestly. It is just like "normal" equations, but the words are more professional, that is all.

f(x) = x%5E3, domain is x=(-3,0,1.2,5)

this is just like y=x%5E3. It tells you the values you are allowed to put into the equation, namely the domain. So put each into the equation, as follows:

1. f(-3) = %28-3%29%5E3
f(-3) = -27

now repeat for each of the domain values.

NOTE: the f(-3) bit just tells you what value of x you have...it has nothing to do with the calculation: just think of it as "y" in y=x%5E3.

Well Amber in a function the X values are known as the domain. (-3, 0,1.2,5) are the number that you would plug in to the equation f(x)=x^3

f(-3)=-3^3
f(-3)=(-3)(-3)(-3)
f(-3)=-27
So the solution set would be (-3,-27)

I'm not completely sure what your question is, since you didn't seem to actually ask one. However, I think the other solution you received was at best incomplete. I would assume that if you are given a function F(x), and domain numbers, that you would want the solution for those domain numbers. The solution should be this:

If x = -3, then f(-3) = (-3)^3 = -27.
If x= 0 , then f(0) = 0^3 = 0
If x = 1.2, then f(1.2) = 1.2^3 = 1.2^3 = 1.728
If x = 5, then f(5) = 5^3 = 125

The solution is probably this { (-3,-27) , (0,0) , (1.2, 1.728) , (5,125) }
