Question 128672This question is from textbook beginning algebra
: please help me find the missing coordinates for this equation... Thank you in advance for your time and efforts. I appreciate the help very much so.
y=x-4 (0,?) (2,?) (4,?)
please explain how to solve this step by step. I have sat here at my desk for quite a long time just surfing the internet looking for walk through help. Thank you again.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! y=x-4
(0,?)
If x=0, y = 0-4 = -4
-----------------
(2,?)
If x=2, y = 2-4 = -2
---------------
(4,?)
If x = 4, y = 4-4 = 0

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Given the equation:
.
y = x - 4
.
and the three coordinate points (0, ?), (2, ?), and (4, ?)
.
You are to find the values for the places marked "?"
.
Remember that coordinate points are always of the form (x, y). Therefore, the first value
within the parentheses is the value of x and the value after the comma is the value of y.
.
Notice that in each of the sets of parentheses in this problem, you are given the first value,
which is the value of x, and you are asked to find the second value, which is the value of y.
.
For the first of the coordinate points (0, ?} you can tell that x equals zero and you
have to find y. So go to the equation:
.
y = x - 4
.
Substitute 0 for x and the equation becomes:
.
y = 0 - 4 = -4
.
So you have solved the first problem. You know that when x equals 0, then y equals -4.
So the first coordinate point is (0, -4)
.
For the second of the coordinate points (2, ?) you have that x equals 2 and you need to
find y. Go to the equation:
.
y = x - 4
.
Substitute 2 for x and solve for y. When x equals 2 the equation is:
.
y = 2 - 4 = -2
.
So now you know that this coordinate point is (2, -2)
.
I'll let you do the work for the last point (4, ?) that you are given. By doing this problem
like the two previous problems you should get an answer of (4, 0).
.
Hope this helps you to understand what the problem asked you to do and helps you to see
how, in problems such as these you can do the work to get the correct answer.
