This is probably kind of strange for you because you are used to finding the volume of a prism with the length, width, and height. But think about what the volume is. It is the area of that base over and over again. Picture a stack of cds. It's basically "filled" by a bunch of bases (the cds). So here, we are going to add that base again and again until we fill it to the top (5 yards up). Or, multiply 18 by 5 and get 90 cubic yards.
Another way to think of it is the volume of a prism is l*w*h, and the l*w is the area of a rectangular base. So here you are given that rather than being asked to calculate it in the problem.
