You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A bus leaves a station at 1 P.M., traveling west at an average rate of 44 mi/h. At 2 P.M. on the same day a second bus leaves the same station, traveling east at a rate of 48 mi/h. Approximately at what time will the two buses be 274 mi apart?
:
Let t = travel time of the 1st bus
then
(t-1) = travel time of the 2nd bus (It left at 2PM, an hour later)
:
Write a distance equation: Distance = speed * time
:
1st bus dist + 2nd bus dist = 274 miles
44t + 48(t-1) = 274
:
44t + 48t - 48 = 274
:
44 + 48t = 274 + 48
:
92t = 322
t = 322%2F92
t = 3.5 hrs travel time of the 1st bus
:
It started at 1 PM therefore the time will be 4:30 PM when they are 274 mi apart
:
:
Check solution by find the distance of each (2nd bus travel time will be 2.5 hr)
44 * 3.5 = 154 mi
48 * 2.5 = 120 mi
--------------------
total mi = 274 mi
