Let x be the length of one of the short pieces. Then the other short piece is also x and the long piece is 8x. These three lengths must add up to 6 yards.

x%2Bx%2B8x=6

10x=6

x=6%2F10=3%2F5

So the short pieces are each 3/5 yard and the long piece is 8 times that or 24/5 yards. (4 and 4/5 yards).
