Let the number be x
two times the number = 2x
difference between 2x and -8 = 2x - (-8)
= 2x + 8
So 2x + 8 = - 12
==> 2x = -12-8
==> 2x = -20
==> x = -20/2
==> x = -10
Thus the number is -10.
