Question 125031: Could you please help me with some problems on solving system graphically? I don't understand the steps,also could you show me how it suppose to look on paper.If you show me the steps right under each other,it doesn't help me to know how to do it on a test.The last step in which you are suppose to graph the two answers,I don't know how to tell where the two intersect.As you can see I need some major help.Thanks for your help in advance LH.
Here are a few practice problems my teacher gave us:
1)x-y=3,
x+y=5
2)3x+y=5,
x-2y=4
3)4y=x+8,
3x-2y=6
4)x=y-1,
2x=3y

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1)x-y=3,
x+y=5
-------
1st: Solve both equations for y:
y = x-3
y = -x+5
-------------
Find two points on each line and draw a line thru the two points:
1st: If x = 0, y = -3; if x = 1, y = -2
That gives you points (0,-3) and (1,-2)
---------
2nd: If x = 0, y = 5; if x = 1, y = 4
That gives you points (0,5) and (1,4)
-----------------------
Graph both equations on the same x/y axis:
graph%28400%2C300%2C-10%2C10%2C-10%2C10%2Cx-3%2C-x%2B5%29%29
-----
Find the solution: (4,1)
---------------
2)3x+y=5,
x-2y=4
---------
Solve for y:
y = -3x+5
y = (1/2)x-2
---------------
Graph:
graph%28400%2C300%2C-10%2C10%2C-10%2C10%2C-3x%2B5%2C%281%2F2%29x-2%29
------------------
Find the solution:
(2,-1)
-----------------
I'll leave the rest to you.
Cheers,
Stan H.
