Write an equation for each statement:

4x + 4y = 480

2x + 3y = 270

Multiply the 2nd equation by 2 and subtract the 1st equation from it
4x + 6y = 540
4x + 4y = 480
------------------subtracting eliminates x, find y
0x + 2y = 60
y = 60%2F2
y = $30 a day for food

Find x, substitute 30 for y in the 1st equation
4x + 4(30) = 480
4x + 120 = 480
4x = 480 - 120
4x = 360
x = 360%2F4
x = $90 a night for hotel

Check solutions in the 2nd equation, substitute for x and y

180 + 90 = 270 as given
