Question 124721: (5) Two cars enter the Florida Turnpike at Commercial Boulevard at 8:00 am, each heading for Wildwood. One car’s average speed is 10 miles per hour more than the other’s. The faster car arrives at Wildwood at 11:00 am, ½ hour before the other car. What was the average speed of each car? How far did each travel? Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! the faster car=3(r+10)
the slower car=3.5*r
seeing as the distances are the same we set these 2 equations equal to each other.
3(r+10)=3.5r
3r+30=3.5r
3r-3.5r=-30
-.5r=-30
r=-30/-.5
r= 60 mph is the speed of the slower car.
60+10=70mph is the speed of the faster car.
distance=3*70=210 miles.
distabce=60*3.5=210 miles.
