This is just like adding regular numbers except that you don't carry when
your partial sum is 10 or larger, you carry when you have reached the number
of smaller units included in one of the next larger units.

+ 1 gal 1 qt 1 pt 9 oz
7 oz plus 9 oz = 16 oz, so the result is 0 oz, carry 1 pint
1 pt plus 1 pt = 2 pts plus the 1 pt carry = 3 pints, result 1 pint,
carry 1 quart
2 qt plus 1 qt = 3 qt plus the 1 qt carry = 4 qt, result 0 qt, carry 1 gallon
5 gal plus 1 gal = 6 gal plus the 1 gal carry = 7 gal
