Question 122324: I need to write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the given line and passes through the given point. I am stuck and confused.
Here is the equation
2x-4y=8 (-3,1)
This is what I have
2x-4y=8
-4y=-2x+8
/-4=/-4/-4
y=1/2x-2
y=mx+b
1=-1/2(-3)+b
1=3/2+b
1-3/2=3/2+b-3/2
1/2=b
y=-2x+1/2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
first find the gradient m from the equation
2x-4y=8
that is by making y the subject
y = 1/2x - 2
from y=mx+b
m = 1/2
x1 and y1 represents the points -3 and 1 respectively
from formular (x-x1)=m(y-y1)
we have (x+3)=1/2(y-1)
2x+6=y-1
2x+7=y is the equation of the line
