You can put this solution on YOUR website!
281%2F17
-
4%2F9
The first thing to do is to convert the fractions to equivalent fractions with a common demoninator. Using the LCD or least common denominator we know that the smallest number that both 9 and 17 will go into is 153 so we can convert each of the fractions as such
1%2F17=9%2F153 and 4%2F9=68%2F153
now we have 289%2F153-68%2F153
Now we see that 68 is greater than 9 so we must "borrow" from the whole number 28 in fractional form. Similar to when borrowing in addition or subtraction of whole numbers. If we borrow 1 from the 28 and convert it to a fractional equvalent fraction we get 153%2F153 and add that to 9%2F153 it would equal 162%2F153
So we now arrive at 27162%2F153-68%2F153
Now we can perform the subtraction
0 from 27 is 27 and 162-68 equals 94 so we are left with
2794%2F153
Now we need to see if we can reduce the 94%2F153
This fraction can not be reduced because there is no common multiple that 94 and 153 share so our final answer is 2794%2F153
Thanks!
