You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Liann bought several apples at the rate of 3 for 35 cents. She sold 9/10's of them at 25 cents each, making a profit of $6.50. How many apples did she fail to sell?
:
Let's find out how many apples she started with
x = no. of apples bought
:
total cost (in cents) of the apples she bought = 35%2F3x
:
No. of apples she sold = 9%2F10x
:
Revenue (in cents) from the apples
R = 9%2F10x * 25
R = 225%2F10x
:
Find x using the profit equation (Revenue - Cost)
225%2F10x - 35%2F3x = 650 cents
675%2F30x 350%2F30x = 650; using 30 as the common denominator
325%2F30x = 650
x = 650 * 30%2F325; when dividing, invert the dividing fraction and mult
x = 60 apples bought originally
:
She sold 9%2F10*60 = 54 apples, leaving 6 apples unsold
:
:
Check solution by finding the profit
Sold 54 * 25 = 1350 cents
Bought60*35%2F3 = 700 cents
--------------------------
Difference = 650 cents or $6.50
