Write an equation for each statement:

Let m = mom's age
then
r = (m-26)

"The sum of their ages is 54."
m + r = 54

How old is Renee's mother?
Substitute (m-26) in the above equation
m + (m-26) = 54
2m - 26 = 54
Add 26 to both sides:
2m = 54 + 26
2m = 80
m = 80/2
m = 40 yrs is Mom's age
