If you really don't like fractions, and most people DON'T, you might want to multiply both sides of this equation by 2 and clear the fractions:

+5+-+%281%2F2%29%2A%28x-6%29+=+4
2%2A+5+-+2%2A%281%2F2%29%2A%28x-6%29+=+2%2A4
10+-%28x-6%29+=+8
10-x+%2B+6+=+8
16+-+x+=+8

Subtract 16 from each side:
16-16-x+=+8+-+16
-x+=+-8

Divide both sides by -1
x+=+8

Check in the original equation:
+5+-+%281%2F2%29%2A%28x-6%29+=+4
5+-+%281%2F2%29%2A+%288-6%29+=+4
+5+-+%281%2F2%29%2A2+=+4+
+5+-+1+=+4
