Question 12158: The winning car in a race had an average speed of 203.7 miles per hour. This was b miles per hour faster than the second-place car. Write an expression for the average speed of the second-place car. Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The second place car was b miles per hour SLOWER than the fastest car. So if the winning car was 203.7 mph, the slower car was 203.7-x mph.
Please see my lesson plan called Introduction to Word Problems. It discusses this with great detail, and lots of examples.
