Mentally, or with pencil and paper, cut the figure into pieces you can work with:
a large rectangle, 9x8 (area = length times width)
a small square, 2x2 (area = side length squared)
a right triangle with legs 3 and 3 (area = one-half base times height -- i.e., one-half the product of the legs)
a quarter circle with radius 3 (one quarter of pi times radius squared)
