In the first 5 seconds, he takes 5 steps -- 3 forward and 2 backward; he traveled 6 feet forward and 4 feet back, ending up 2 feet from his starting point.
  
That continues for 8 cycles, taking 8*5 = 40 seconds, leaving him 16 feet from the start.
  
In the next 3 seconds, he moves 6 feet forward, reaching 22 feet from the start, which is the other side of the carpet, so he is done.
