He walked for a total of 9 hours. 4 of those hours he was walking at 2.5 mph; the rest of the time , which was 9-4 = 5 hours, he was walking at 2.75 mph.

Before his lunch break, the distance he covered was 4(2.5) = 10 miles; after the break he covered 5(2.75) = 13.75 miles.
