At noon the hot air balloon headed north at 8 miles per hour. Three hours later, the glider header south from the same location at 16 miles per hour. At what time will the hot air balloon be 168 miles from the glider?

ballon speed 8mph
Glider speed 16 mph
ballon moves 24 miles in 3 hours 3 PM
At 3 PM glider crosses balloon
opposite direction
Effective distancing speed = 24 mph (16+8)

Distance apart =168 miles
Time = D/S = (168-24)/24 = 6 hours
They take 6 hours to be 168 miles apart from 3 PM
At 9 PM they are 168 miles apart

That DUDE/DUDETTE is WRONG again!!
Six (6) hours after glider leaves (departs 3:00 p.m.), or 9 hours after balloon leaves (departs noon), or
at 9:00 p.m. is when the 2 will be 168 miles apart!!

Let x be the number of hours after noon

The balloon travels x hours at 8 mph; the glider travels (x-3) hours at 16 mph, in the opposite direction.

For the two to be 168 miles apart...

8%28x%29%2B16%28x-3%29=168
8x%2B16x-48=168
24x=216
x=9

The two will be 168 miles apart at x=9 hours after noon.

ANSWER: 9 pm

CHECK: 9(8)+6(16) = 72+96 = 168

Less formally....

At 3 pm, the balloon has traveled 8*3=24 miles. After that, the two must travel another 168-24 = 144 miles, at an effective rate of 8+16=24 mph; that takes 144/24 = 6 more hours.

So they will be 168 miles apart 6 hours after 3 pm.

ANSWER: 9 pm
