(2) Use parentheses where needed. I suspect the equation you posted is not the equation you want:
3y-8/12 =y/5 --> 3y-8%2F12+=y%2F5

My guess is that it is probably supposed to be
(3y-8)/12 =y/5 --> %283y-8%29%2F12+=y%2F5
