Question 1201266: I was taking a test and below is the question:
What is 2.3 x 10 in exponential notation?
I choose the answer 2.3 x 10 to the 1st power.
However, the answer was 2.3 x 10 to the zero power.
I thought at 2.3 x 10 = 23 which represents the answer I chose.
Please explain why the answer was 2.3 x 10 to the zero power.
I thought 10 to the zero power was 1 and 2.3 x 1 is 2.3.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2.3 * 10 is equal to 2.3 * 10 ^ 1.
it is also equal to 23 * 10^0.
the first version is in scientific notation.
the second version would be in exponential notatin.
exponential notation is a * b ^ x
in this case, a would be 23 and b with be 10 and x would be the exponent.
since a * b ^ x can give you 2.3 * 10 ^ 1, or it can give you 23 * 10 ^ 0, it appears that scientific notation can be seen as a subset of exponential notation.
i'm pretty sure that the problem meant that 2.3 * 10 ^ 1 is equivalent to 23 * 10 ^ 0, or the other way around, i.e. 23 * 10 ^ 0 is the same as 2.3 * 10 ^ 1.
