You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Distance(d) equals rate(r) times time(t) or d=rt; r=d/t and t=d/r
Let t=driving time for Maria
then 5-t=driving time for Carlos
Distance Maria drove=51*t
Distance Carlos drove=53*(5-t)
Now we are told that the distance Maria drove plus distance Carlos drove =258 mi
so:
51t+53(5-t)=258 get rid of parens
51t+265-53t=258 subtract 265 from both sides
51t+265-265-53t=258-265 collect like terms
-2t=-7 divide both sides by -2
t=3.5 hr-----------------------------driving time for Maria
5-3.5=1.5hr-----------------------driving time for Carlos
CK
53*1.5+51*3.5=258
79.5+178.5=258
258=258
Hope this helps---ptaylor
