.
Wendy took a trip from one city to another, a distance of 330 mi.
She traveled part of the way by bus, which arrived at the train station
just in time for Wendy to complete her journey by train.
The bus averaged 30 mi/h, and the train averaged 65 mi/h. The entire trip took
7 1/2 h. How long did Wendy spend on the train?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First,  7 1/2 hours = 7.5 hours.
Second, let x be the time spent on the train.
Then the time spent on the bus is (7.5-x) hours.
The distanse traveled by the train was 65x miles        (the speed times hours).
The distanse traveled by the bus   was 30*(7.5-x) miles (the speed times hours, again).
The total distance equation is
    65x + 30*(7.5-x) = 330  miles.
Simplify and find x
    65x + 225 - 30x = 330
    65x - 30x = 330 - 225
       35x    =    105
         x    =    105/35 = 3.
ANSWER.  Wendy spent 3 hours on the train.
CHECK.  65*3 + (7.5-3)*30 = 330 miles,  the total distance.   ! correct !
Solved.
