In 25 years, Joseph highlight%28cross%28age%29%29 will be eight times as old
as he was 10 years ago. How old is he now?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let J be his age now.
In 25 years his age will be J+25 years.
Eight times his age 10 years ago is 8*(J-10).
Write an equation as you read the problem
    J + 25 = 8*(J-10).
Simplify and find J
    J + 25  = 8J - 80
    80 + 25 = 8J -  J
      105   =   7J
        J = 105/7 = 15.
ANSWER.  Joseph is 15 years old.
Solved.
Always be aware of the possibility of solving a problem using formal algebra by setting up the problem in different ways.
The other tutor has provided one typical solution, starting by using Joseph's current age as the variable.
Here is an alternate setup for solving the problem.
Let x be Joseph's age 10 years ago.
Then Joseph's age 25 years from now will be x+35.
Joseph's age 25 years from now will be 8 times his age 10 years ago:
x%2B35=8x
7x=35
x=5
Joseph was 5 years old 10 years ago, so his age now is 15.
ANSWER: 15
In 25 years. Joseph age will be eight times as old as he was 10 years ago. How old is he now?
--------------------
8 times and a difference of 35 years ---> 5 and 40 (in 25 years)
5+10 = 15, his age now.
