.
You purchased 225 shares of stocks total.
Stock a at 50 per share and stock b at 75 per share.
For a total of 13,750. How many of each were purchased?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let x be the number of shares purchased at 75 per share.
Then the number of shares purchased at 75 per share was (225-x).
As you read the problem, write the total money amount equation
    75x + 50*(225-x) = 13750  dollars.
Simplify, express x and get the answer
    75x + 50*225 - 50x = 13750
    75x - 50x          = 13750 - 50*225
       25x             =      2500
         x             =      2500/25 = 100.
ANSWER.  100 shares at $75  and  the rest  225 - 100 = 125 shares at $50.
CHECK.   100*75 + 125*50 = 13750 dollars, the total amount spent.  ! Correct !
