    2300%2F%28500%2Bx%29 = 1700%2F%28500-x%29,    (1)


where x is the speed of the jet stream.


From this equation

    2300*(500-x) = 1700*(500+x)

    2300*500 - 2300x = 1700*500 + 1700x

    2300*500 - 1700*500 = 2300x + 1700x

          600*500       =  4000x

             x          =  300000%2F4000 = 75  mi/hr  (rounded).    ANSWER


CHECK.  Left side of equation (1) is  2300%2F%28500%2B75%29 = 4.00 hours;

        Right side of equation (1) is  1700%2F%28500-75%29 = 4.00 hours.
