Question 1197926: On a wall 82 and 3/5 cm wide, Peter is going to hang four pictures beside each other, each measuring 10 and 1/4 cm wide. He will leave 3 and 4/5 cm in between each pair of adjacent pictures. He plans to use two nails to hang each picture and will centre these nails leaving 5 and 1/4 cm between each pair. I'll leave the actual calculations to you; you won't get any benefit from working this problem if I do them for you.

(1) total width of wall: 82 3/5 cm

(2) total width of the four pictures and the three spaces between them: 4 times 10 1/4 cm, plus 3 times 3 4/5 cm

(3) distance from one end of the wall to edge of first picture: half of the difference between (1) and (2) [the four pictures are centered on the wall]

(4) distance from the edge of each picture to the closest nail used to hang the picture: half the difference between 10 1/4 cm and 5 1/4 cm [the two nails on each picture are centered on the picture]

(5) distance from end of wall to first nail: (3) plus (4)
