You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Unknown words per minute, r, for the first part.
Eight jobs in 3 hours at unknown rate, r.

Second part, r+60 words per minute, but 1 hour ("2 hours faster");
Same number of jobs.

r%2A3=%28r%2B60%29%2A1
-
3r=r%2B60
2r=60
cross%28r=30%29------------- original speed.....
--

Not "by 60", but as "to 60" words per minute:

%28r%29%283%29=%2860%29%281%29
r=60%2F3
r=20-------------original speed, words per minute

The solution from tutor @josgarithmetic has the typing speed increased BY 60 words per minute; the statement of the problem says the typing speed increased TO 60 words per minute.

The job was done in 3 hours; at a typing speed of 60 wpm it would have been completed 2 hours faster -- i.e., in 1 hour.

The time required to complete the job is 1/3 of what it was; that means the typing speed was 3 times what it was before.

If 60 wpm is 3 times the original speed, then the original typing speed was 20 wpm.

ANSWER: 20 words per minute
