(1) Read the given equation out loud: "x is the logarithm, base 2, of 1/8".

(2) Now say out loud 100 times (okay, maybe 3 or 4): "The logarithm is the exponent".

Now you know the base is 2 and the exponent is x; so the "1/8" has to be the answer:

Then solve by writing 1/8 as a power of 2:

2%5Ex+=+2%5E%28-3%29

The bases are the same, so the exponents are equal:
