You can put this solution on YOUR website! The ratio of the number of marbles May, Teddy and Sam had was 3:5:2.
let x = the multiplier
then
3x = no of marbles May had
5x = no. Ted had
2x = no. Sam had
During a game, May lost half of her marbles to Teddy.
Now May had 1.5x marbles and Ted has 6.5x marbles
:
Teddy lost 20 marbles to Sam
(6.5x - 20) = Teds marbles
and
2x + 20 = Sam's marbles
who (Sam) then had 3 times the number of marbles May had at the end of the game.
(2x+20) = 3(1.5x)
2x + 20 = 4.5x
2x - 4.5x = -20
-2.5x = -20
x = -20/-2.5
x = 8 is the multiplier
therefore now
1.5(8) = 12 for May
6.5(8) - 20 = 32 for Ted
2(8) + 20 = 36 for Sam
:
(a) What was the percentage increase in the number of marbles Sam had at the end of the game?
Sam started with 2(8) = 16 and ended with 36. a 225% increase
:
(b) How many marbles did Teddy have at the end of the game? 32
